LAW ENFORCEMENT VIEWS
“I ... know that in practice, [the death penalty] does more harm than good. So while I hang on to my theoretical views, as I’m sure many of you will, I stand before you to say that society is better off without capital punishment… Life in prison without parole in a maximum-security detention facility is a better alternative.”
-Police Chief James Abbott of West Orange, New Jersey (2010)

Does the Death Penalty lower crime rates?
Does the death penalty lower crime rates in the states they are used and how does it compare to the other states that do not have it?
The death penalty is used to punish criminals for their crimes and many people believed that it also lowered crime rate. But a new study done by the leading criminologists in the country found that the death penalty did not deterrent criminals form killing or doing any major crime (1). About eighty-eight percent of the top criminologist believe that the death penalty is not a good way to scared criminal for committing a homicide. They also agreed that if the death penalty was taking out that it would not have any effect on the crime rates or the mind set of criminals (2). North Carolina has the death penalty as a choice but has not used it in a while yet the crime rates and murder rates have lowered since the execution has stopped (3). Most criminals commit crimes in the heat of passion and do not think about the death penalty as an option because they just want to cause pain either because they have mental issues or are unstable. So instead of trying to scared them the government should instead try to help them and if they do not want help then they will be sent to jail for life. “In some years, the murder rate in non-death penalty states was as much as 46 percent lower than in death penalty states”, this proves that the death penalty is just a waste of money and very ineffective way to punish criminals (4). Many people have tried to get rid of the death penalty in the U.S. because it is immoral, waste of many, and does not deterrent to homicide. The U.S. is the only Western Country to still use the death penalty, for many reason but it is because countries have figured out that it is ineffective and with more people oppose, it is only a matter of time until the U.S. get rid of it permanently (5).
